JSS Medical College
& Ayurveda Hospital
During the second week of our stay in Mysore, we had the opportunity to take lectures at Jagadguru Sri Shivarathreeshwara (JSS) Medical College. These lectures were very interesting since they went beyond teaching Western medicine. Professors came in to talk to us about topics such as the healthcare systems in India, cervical cancer screening methods, mental health care, naturopathy, and ayurvedic practices, just to name a few. Then, we received a tour of the JSS Ayurveda Hospital afterward. It was fascinating to see what other alternatives they had to Western medicine that offered the same solution but natural. But, they also showed how modern medicine can be integrated with Ayurveda to achieve the best result possible for certain patients. For example, some parts of plants or seeds are used in pills for certain treatments to meet the patient's medical needs. And research wasn't just limited to the labs, the hospital also had a garden outside where they grow certain plants used for medical purposes.
This board is located at the entrance of JSS Medical College, it proudly shows its strategic plan through the acronym MANTRA.
This is the other board that is also located near the entrance of JSS Medical College. It displays the college site map showing where each medical division is located, most of the lectures were held on the first and second floors.
This is the entrance to the dissection hall at JSS. No pictures could be taken inside because a cadaver was currently being dissected.
This is the front entrance of JSS Ayurveda Hospital, next to this building was the JSS Ayurveda Medical College.
This apparatus tells how much time it takes for a tablet to dissolve. It mimics digestive enzymes to break down the tablet.
This tool is used for color therapy, the patient is put inside and the box is put in the sunlight for 30 minutes so the light will shine through showing the colors inside.
This needle was inserted near the elbow area of my arm to demonstrate a part of acupuncture therapy, inserting it in this specific area is supposed to help improve the immune system.
At the Ayurveda hospital, one of the JSS staff members showed us a table full of different seeds that served different medical purposes.
One of the seeds that caught my attention was the castor seeds, since it is one that I have heard of a lot before.
Located right outside the Ayurveda hospital, was the garden where they grow certain plants. Each plant has a sign labeled with its name, what part of the plant can be used, and what medical purpose it serves.
